NFL Trade Rumors: Rams’ Myles Garrett move sparks Aaron Donald comeback speculation

The Los Angeles Rams just made the most chaotic offseason move of 2026, and somehow it got even more chaotic overnight. After landing Myles Garrett from Cleveland in a blockbuster deal, the internet started asking a question nobody expected: could Aaron Donald come out of retirement to play alongside him? Turns out, Donald himself is asking the same thing.

The Rams traded for Myles Garrett and now Aaron Donald wants back in — this defensive line would be historic

Pat McAfee reached out to Donald directly on Tuesday, the morning after the trade went through, and Donald's reply left the door wide open. "It for sure got me thinking," he texted McAfee. "35, removed two years ago, gotta see if that fire can light back up." That's not a no and for a player with Donald's competitive DNA, it reads closer to a yes than anyone anticipated. Former teammate Michael Brockers threw more fuel on the fire, cryptically noting that his guy "stays ready so he doesn't have to get ready." Donald is reportedly still in elite shape, which makes the whole thing feel less like PR flirtation and more like genuine temptation.
The Rams' trade for Garrett was already the kind of move that rewrites a franchise's trajectory. They sent Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and a 2029 third-rounder to Cleveland, a steep price for a player who just set the NFL's single-season sack record with 23 last year and is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
The moment the deal was announced, the Rams became the only team with single-digit Super Bowl odds. Then Donald started texting Pat McAfee, and the whole conversation shifted.

What this defensive line would actually mean

Put simply, a Garrett-Donald pairing would be the most frightening defensive front in modern NFL history. Garrett is 30, at the absolute peak of his powers, the kind of pass rusher who commands double teams on every snap. Donald is a three-time DPOY, an eight-time first-team All-Pro, and finished with 111 career sacks, numbers that make him a first-ballot Hall of Famer the moment he's eligible. His last season in 2023 he was still earning All-Pro honors at 32.
The idea that he has spent two years staying in shape while watching the Rams build around Matthew Stafford, and now suddenly the reigning DPOY is in his building? That's not nothing. Returning would also be logistically clean. Donald is still on the Rams' reserve/retired list, meaning reinstatement is straightforward and his salary would simply be reinstated. Adam Schefter has pumped the brakes citing cap concerns, but the Rams just gave up three draft picks and a starter for Garrett. They didn't go that far to stop halfway. If Donald's fire lights back up, LA will find a way to make room.
